The parents of the late Deborah Samuel of Shagari College of Education Sokoto, Sokoto State, have described their daughter’s death as sad and painful, and have said they have left her killers to God.
Deborah’s ashes were laid to rest Saturday evening in her hometown of Tungan Magajiya in Niger State’s Rijau Local Government Area.
Her classmates stoned her to death and set her ablaze on Thursday for allegedly making a blasphemous statement about Prophet Mohammed on a WhatsApp group.
In response to their daughter’s death, the bereaved parents stated that they have nothing to say or do about their child’s death and have decided to leave everything in God’s hands.
Mr. Emmanuel Garba, a security personnel with the Niger State Water Works Cooperation at Tungan-Magajiya says, “we can’t say or do anything except take it easy as an act of God.” We’ve left everything to God and decided to take it as it comes.”
When asked who brought his deceased daughter’s body back from Sokoto State, the father explained that he personally went and brought her remains back to be buried.
“I personally went and brought back my daughter’s body so that I could bury my own child.” This is due to the fact that keeping her in the morgue will not result in her return.
“When I arrived, I met with government officials and explained why I needed to take her back home, and they agreed.” When we arrived at the morgue, those in charge asked me to sign the necessary paperwork, which I did. They handed over the corpse to me.”
“I personally paid the sum of N120,000 to the driver out of many who refused to convey her back home and it is because of the condition of the remains,” Garba said. Except for one, all of the drivers we approached refused.”
Confirming the Sokoto State Government’s request that his daughter’s body not be returned, the deceased’s father stated, “the government wanted me to leave the remains, when they called me, I said no, they should allow me to please, bury my daughter.”
Mrs. Alheri Emmanuel, Deborah’s mother, told our reporter that Deborah was the second of seven children, and that it is heartbreaking to have lost her at such a young age, on whom they were relying to help support them in the future.
On her medical condition, the deceased’s mother stated that she is now stable and has been discharged from the hospital, where she was admitted after learning of her daughter’s heinous murder.
Mrs. Alheri said through tears, “I have nothing to say, I am grateful to God and for your efforts.” I have given my heart to God, and may God strengthen me. “Because of what happened to me, I will no longer send my children to schools where there is so much money involved.” Some of her siblings’ education suffered as a result of her education because it is difficult to care for them all at the same time. And now things are getting difficult for us.”
When asked for his reaction, her elder brother, Nakaka Garba, simply stated, “I have nothing to say, we are pained by what happened, but we have left everything to God.”
The father explained that their daughter answered Deborah as ‘Samuel’ rather than ‘Garba’ because “she has been living with my brother since she was in primary school and had been using the name.”
