Reacting to the decision of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, calling for a yardstick that will serve as a guide for effective community policing within the state and the country at large in a recent town hall meeting tagged, ‘Community policing: emphasizing, Building a safer Nigeria together,’ organized by the Ministry of Police Affairs at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island which caught the attention of leader of Oodua People's Congress reformed, Chief Dare Adesope who advise the Lagos governor to take into consideration the local security operatives who are more familiar with their terrain and also know their neighborhood like the back of their palm.
According to Adesope, “Community policing is not a new concept to us as a nation. It has, over the years, been at the center of conversations on the best strategy to adopt in order to effectively address the challenge of insecurity manifesting in rising cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, and cultism, among others’’ he affirmed
The OPC boss explained further that since community policing creates a partnership between law enforcement and residents. The more involved law enforcement is with the residents they are sworn to protect, the more residents can help law enforcement achieve their goals.
The problem of armed robbery, kidnappings for ransom, ritual killings, Fulani herdsmen attacks, assassinations, terrorism, insurgency, internet fraud and Ponzi schemes or investment swindle, among others have created the greatest challenges to the Nigerian Police Force.
Adesope also reacting to President General of apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, visit to Lagos recently to address issues affecting Igbo in the economic capital of the country which arises from a controversial issue as to who own Lagos. The OPC boss said the Igbo really go beyond their boundary during the presidential election so Yoruba people need to put them in check.
‘’If Igbo decide to tell their children untrue story about Yoruba territory then we should start telling our children too about the visitors that are claiming ownership, they claim we have sold our lands to them but that is not true because certificate of occupancy only mean one can occupy for a certain period which does not give one total ownership.’’
Emphatically, he said Yoruba are most hospitable people so the visitor should not misinterpret the hospitality to be stupidity, everyone should learn to live in harmony.
Rolling out his yelutide message, he advised that everyone must be security conscious during this festive period because there is habitual increase in criminal activities ' We should always be on guard and be ready to share necessary information to security operatives.
