There was an atmosphere of grief and despair at Abesan Housing Estate on Friday afternoon as officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) demolished a distressed building at Block 341 over safety concerns.
Many residents and onlookers watched in tears as the excavators pulled down the structure, bringing an end to years of occupation and leaving several families devastated. Some affected occupants lamented the loss of their homes and belongings, while others expressed uncertainty about where they would relocate.
LASBCA officials said the demolition became necessary after the building was declared structurally distressed and unfit for human habitation. According to the agency, the exercise was carried out to avert a possible building collapse that could have resulted in the loss of lives and property.
Residents who witnessed the demolition described the scene as emotional, with many people weeping as the building came down. While some sympathised with the affected families, others commended the Lagos State Government for taking proactive measures to prevent another building collapse.
Some of the displaced residents appealed to the state government to provide support and temporary relief to families affected by the demolition, noting that many had little time to secure alternative accommodation.
The demolition of Block 341 forms part of the Lagos State Government's ongoing campaign to identify and remove distressed buildings across the state as part of efforts to safeguard lives and property and strengthen compliance with building safety regulations.
