Women protest alleged brutality during empowerment programme

Residents of the Oko Baba Agba in Kosofe Local government, Lagos, Friday protested the disruption of an empowerment programme organized by the monarch of the community, Oba Kabir Adesegun Bashir.

A group of women, mainly widows were said to have queued at the entrance of Oba Bashir’s for the collection of weekly food items and cash on Friday when hoodlums numbering over 100 stormed the place and brutalized them.

The widows were said to have been badly beaten by the thugs to the extent that many of them sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

It was said that the hoodlums said the monarch was using the distribution of the food items to lure people to his side and consolidate himself on the throne.

‘’Please save us from this mindless brutality. We are widows and Oba Bashir has been our benefactor. He has been giving us food items and money for our upkeep on a weekly. Those who sponsored the thugs to attack us are jealous of Oba Bashir’s magnanimity and philanthropy,’’ said the leader of the protesters identified simply as Madam Oriyomi.

‘’The state government should intervene and save us from the sponsored thugs who have been harassing us in a bid to starve u by stopping u from collecting food items and cash from our amiable monarch, Oba Kabir,’’ the protesters chorused.

One of the victims, Madam Rukayat Ajibade said: ‘’ The monarch usually gives us food items and cash on Fridays and we were already in the queue when some hoodlums came and started beating us with the cane. Many of us were injured and were taken to hospital for treatment.

‘’We ran for our dear lives and while we were running away they still continue to beat us. We want the state government to intervene and apprehend the hoodlums.’’
